One Of The Most Powerful DC Characters Is Officially Joining James Gunn’s DCU

Despite being a franchise in its infancy, the DC Universe is about to introduce one of its most powerful characters from the comics. After 2025’s Superman and 2026’s Supergirl, James Gunn’s DCU has no real need for true powerhouses anymore. Of course, that won’t stop upcoming DC movies from introducing the likes of Wonder Woman and more Green Lanterns, the latter of which are set to appear in 2026’s HBO TV show focusing on the intergalactic cops.

With the DCU’s Chapter One being titled Gods and Monsters, it is no surprise that some of the most powerful DC Comics characters are being introduced this early. Supergirl marks only the second theatrical release of the franchise and, with it, the second Kryptonian warrior to protect Earth and many other planets. As part of Supergirl, though, one of the most powerful DC Comics characters of all is also being introduced: Lobo.

Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter, may not be quite as physically strong as Supergirl or Superman, but in terms of pure durability, he is one of the most powerful in DC’s roster. For all intents and purposes, Lobo cannot be killed. The character has an insanely strong healing factor, which, in the comics, even allows Lobo to regenerate from nothing more than a pool of his own blood. Thanks to this immense durability, Lobo has withstood attacks from Superman many a time in the comics.

Supergirl could even feature a Lobo vs Kara clash, which will showcase the former’s power adequately. Again, this is not to say Lobo matches up with DC’s biggest hitters from a brute strength perspective, but his healing ability allows him to hang in fights for a long time. Hopefully, Supergirl highlights this, setting up Lobo for a powerful future in the DC Universe.

Lobo’s Introduction Will Be A Fun Challenge For The DCU

One thing that will be interesting to see about Lobo’s near-invulnerability is how the DCU provides emotional stakes for the character. If there is a character that, for the most part, simply cannot die, it will be difficult to make any narrative involving him have weight to the audience. This gives James Gunn and the other filmmakers involved in the DCU’s future a fun challenge to overcome. Supergirl may even have overcome this challenge, but we simply won’t know until the movie drops in theaters.

Beyond that, Lobo is sure to continue in the DCU. Whether that be in a solo movie or as more of a side character in other projects remains to be seen, but either way, the DCU needs to find a way to make Lobo vulnerable, to an extent. After all, the most intriguing characters are those with weaknesses; without Kryptonite, Superman and Supergirl would simply be unkillable gods, robbing any story involving them of any real narrative or character-based stakes. Lobo doesn’t have an equivalent to Kryptonite, however, so the DCU needs to find a way to weaken him.

Where Lobo Could Appear In The DCU Next

After Supergirl, it is expected that many will begin wondering when Lobo might appear in the DC Universe next. A possible project for this is Man of Tomorrow. James Gunn has insisted that Man of Tomorrow is both a Superman sequel and a wider DCU film, featuring many of the characters that have appeared thus far. At the time of the former’s release, Lobo will have been in Supergirl. This makes him a possible candidate for the movie’s cast.

Beyond that, Lobo could appear in a Supergirl sequel, given that he is being introduced alongside Kara. Regardless, Lobo is sure to be a big part of the DC Universe‘s future, with the franchise only promising to showcase his immense power more often as it continues.
