On many occasions, Final Fantasy 7 has proven that it’s not just part of the Final Fantasy series; it’s also a franchise of its own. This was especially apparent once all the ancillary releases, such as Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children, began rolling out as part of the “Compilation of Final Fantasy 7” project.
Square Enix and fans were keen for more of one of the most iconic parties in the JRPG pantheon, leading all the way into the remake trilogy of Final Fantasy 7, which itself is opening up more avenues for FF7 releases.
That includes revamps for existing characters. Thanks to a listing from BigBadToyStore, we have a glimpse at a new official redesign of Tifa, and it’s looking great.
Although the Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering collaboration happened roughly a year ago, the reverberations are still being felt. It was an extremely successful set for Wizards of the Coast, and fans really took to it, making it one of the most sought out sets in Magic history. Anecdotal, even people who had no prior interest in Magic were looking for packs at retail.
Thanks to a brand-new playmat design recently unveiled by retailers, it seems like Tifa is coming back into the spotlight, featuring art from the game and her training regalia. Made of soft fabric, Ultra Pro is releasing a new playmat that’s a “vibrant, full-color artwork with a specialized spot foil treatment.” The dimensions are 24 in. x 13.5 in.
The playmat is up for pre-order now and is shipping sometime in 2026 (many retailers list TBA or placeholder dates of December 31, 2026). They’ll update once everything is settled.
Over the years, Tifa has appeared in many Square Enix titles, including the Dissidia series, LittleBigPlanet 2, a Smash Ultimate spirit, and all-star Final Fantasy games like Record Keeper. If Square Enix is dipping into a well of beloved characters, you can bet your bottom dollar that Tifa will likely be considered.
Tifa is undergoing a renaissance of sorts in the 2020s, as fans new and old celebrate her return in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. She’s due for new designs in Final Fantasy 7: Revelation as well, as the third entry will allow players to further customize their party’s appearances, much like Final Fantasy X-2, which Tifa would fit right in.
Beyond that, she’s also coming as part of the Year 4 celebration for Street Fighter 6, along with Arjun, Yasmine, and Bosch. She’ll be rocking her classic FF7 outfit by default.
