New Simulator Game on Steam Looks Like Kingdom Come Deliverance Meets Papers, Please

Gate Guard Simulator is an upcoming Steam game that injects similar gameplay mechanics to Papers, Please, but ties it together with a medieval setting, a la Kingdom Come: Deliverance. While Gate Guard Simulator may not be available for purchase just yet, gamers can get their first taste of the game by signing up for the ongoing playtest on Steam.

Gate Guard Simulator comes from developer Redox Interactive, a studio previously best known for its work on HTML5 browser games for licenses like Barbie, PAW Patrol, and Star Trek. However, this upcoming title is the studio’s first Steam release, marking a significant milestone in its history.

For Helldivers 2 fans getting tired of spreading democracy through space, this promising Steam game offers co-op action in a vastly different setting.

Gate Guard Simulator Has Some Serious Papers, Please Vibes in a Medieval Setting

Gate Guard Simulator is an upcoming simulator game that takes inspiration from some of Papers, Please‘s gameplay mechanics. Players work as guards outside a castle, inspecting the seals of those who wish to enter. They must inspect the goods of the citizens, while looking for contraband and convicts. Players will even be offered bribes, and it’s up to them to either uphold the law or turn a blind eye. Ultimately, a decision must then be made to either let the person pass or refuse them at the gate, with dire consequences for getting it wrong. The Paper’s Please DNA is strong here.

What really sets Gate Guard Simulator apart from other similar titles is its medieval art style, which looks like it could be from Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It’s not an RPG like KCD, but the art style certainly has some strong similarities that will feel familiar to fans of Warhorse Studios’ RPG series. This blend of these games looks set to make Gate Guard Simulator a success when it launches on Steam.

Redox Interactive has yet to announce exactly when Gate Guard Simulator will be available, but there is an ongoing playtest that gamers can join right now to give feedback on the game and its current state. This can be done via the game’s Steam page. Those who want to give it a try should act quickly – in an announcement on June 7, the developer confirmed that the open playtest will continue “for a few more days.” However, as of June 14, it is still available to claim. This means the playtest could end at any time.

It’s well-documented that Steam has a very low barrier to entry for new titles nowadays, and that can lead to an abundance of low-effort games flooding the marketplace. However, there are also plenty of awesome new indie games like Gate Guard Simulator that are now easier to discover than ever before.
