New Free Game From Assassin’s Creed Creator Officially Available Now

Assassins’s Creed is a beloved series that will likely never die, with a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag set to release later this Summer. But while Ubisoft has been busy keeping the series alive, the original creator of Assassin’s Creed, Patrice Désilets, has been working on something different, but still familiar to fans of the franchise.

Announced and shown off at Summer Games Fest 2026, 1666: Amsterdam is the newest title from the creator of Assassin’s Creed. And, not only was a trailer for the very Assassin’s Creed-esque game shown off, but a free prologue for the game was made available to download immediately afterward.

Being developed and published by Panache Studios, 1666: Amsterdam is, much like the Assassin’s Creed series, a third-person action-adventure game set in both a specific historic time period, and in the modern day. However, here, rather than taking control of legendary killers, players will be taking command of a powerful witch.

While it remains unknown what the exact story of 1666: Amsterdam will be like, it’s obviously drawing influence from the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Of course, the twist here is that witches are very much real, and also not the villains they were made out to be.

“Every 333 years, something stirs,” the official description for 1666: Amsterdam on Steam reads. “1666: Amsterdam is a 3rd person Dark, Story-Led, Action-Adventure where Noa, the Collector, wields witchcraft to uncover demonic entities hiding behind human faces. Investigate by day. Face your demons at night.”

Other details about what sets the game apart from its contemporaries can be found elsewhere on the Steam page. “Noa commands witchcraft and spellcasting passed down through generations of Zaindaris. Each target can be approached in multiple ways. Strategy, timing, and choice define the outcome. Every Esbat is a reckoning.”

“Noa is not alone. Aaron, summoned from 1999, now sees the world through the eyes of a cat. Together, they are one: Switch between Noa and Aaron across two radically different playstyles. One wields witchcraft. The other has four paws and flair.”

The Steam description for 1666: Amsterdam (Prologue) also offers more details as to what players can expect from the free download.

“Partake in Noa’s Commencement as she takes on the mantle of the Collector, a Zaindaris tasked with preserving the balance of the world,” one section begins. “But first, she must choose. A companion will walk beside her through what lies ahead. Choose wisely.”

“This prologue is a narrative experience lasting approximately 30 minutes. It introduces the world, characters, and mystery of 1666: Amsterdam. The core gameplay loop, i.e. investigation, tracking, and confronting the Originals during the Esbat begins in the full game.”

1666: Amsterdam has no official release date.
