Hasbro is unleashing a whole new wave of The Transformers: The Movie figures in celebration of its 40th anniversary. There are even a few that fans definitely didn’t see coming.
Hasbro has officially unveiled the next lineup of figures from the fan-favorite Transformers Studio Series More Than Meets the Eye Collection. Among the Autobots and Decepticons joining the collection are iconic characters such as Prowl and Starscream, as well as lesser known Transformers like the Insecticon trio of Bombshell, Shrapnel, and Kickback. Readers can take a look at each of the upcoming offerings in the gallery down below.
Hasbro’s New More Than Meets the Eye Figures are Perfect for Longtime Transformers Fans
The next wave of More Than Meets the Eye figures is slated to arrive in stores this summer, and will be available exclusively at Target. Each figure will feature a look ripped right out of The Transformers: The Movie, with all five of the new Transformers Studio Series MTMTE Collection action figures boasting film-inspired detailing and numerous points of articulation, giving fans near endless possibilities when it comes to posing the latest additions to their personal collections.
The five-inch-tall Transformers Studio Series MTMTE Collection Prowl action figure features a 15-step transformation process to go from Autobot to police car. The line’s Starscream figure ups the ante at 6.75 inches tall with a 27-step transformation process to change from a towering Decepticon to a sleek fighter jet. The Prowler and Starscream figures both retail for $27.99 and $43.99, respectively.
The three Transformers Studio Series MTMTE Collection Insecticon action figures come as a set, which retails for $79.99. The official product description from Hasbro reads, “Each figure is 5.5 inches in robot mode and features movie-inspired deco and details. Insecticon Bombshell converts from bot to beetle mode in 13 steps, Insecticon Shrapnel from bot to stag beetle in 11 steps, and Insecticon Kickback from bot to grasshopper mode in 14 steps. With 6 glow-in-the-dark Energon cube accessories, this Transformers figure set makes an awesome addition to any collection.”
Why The Transformers: The Movie’s 40th Anniversary Is So Worth Celebrating
Released to theaters in 1986, The Transformers: The Movie was directed by Nelson Shin from a screenplay by Ron Friedman. The film marked one of the most hotly-anticipated animated features of the era, as well as one of the first feature adaptations of an ’80s cartoon property. While The Transformers: The Movie only grossed $5.9 million against a $6 million budget over the course of its original theatrical run, and was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews at the time, the film has gone on to cement its place in the wider realm of pop culture.
Although The Transformers: The Movie is widely lauded today, there is no denying the devastating impact it had on young viewers during its heyday. In fact, The Transformers: The Movie is so infamous that earlier this year Hasbro announced an official Apology Tour in the name of every fan who was left emotionally scarred by their experience with the film.
