Milly Alcock Explains Why Her Supergirl Doesn’t Need Superman

The DC Universe is officially resuming this summer, as the spotlight will focus on a different beloved Kryptonian this time.

David Corenswet’s Superman film brought the Man of Steel back to the big screen in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate. However, Clark Kent’s latest live-action chapter also featured a major cameo from Kara Zor-El herself, bringing the two iconic cousins together.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for Supergirl, Milly Alcock opened up about what she enjoyed the most about finding the contrast between who Kara is and who Superman is, following her 2025 introduction. The Australian lead shared, “I think for me, the way that I approached Kara was just so independently of Clark, and that’s what made those scenes when I did get the opportunity to work with David so exciting, because I understood that there was natural friction between the two of them.”

Crossan also spoke with Ana Nogueira, who penned the screenplay for the Supergirl movie, as she was asked about writing that contrast in Kara’s solo adventure. Nogueira explained, “Oh, it was so much fun. I mean, Superman’s voice and who he is, I think, has just been in our collective psyche for so long, since childhood. This is how Superman is. And then David brings so much, this other extra layer to it that I just think is so lovely. And then Kara was just always kind of in my heart. So that was the natural friction of something that felt really honest to me, of who she is and this guy that I’ve had in my collective consciousness and all of our collective consciousness for so long.”

While Corenswet’s DC hero is part of the Supergirl cast, Kal-El is said to have only a few scenes, including when Kara first arrives on Earth, which will likely be through flashback. Trailers have also shown him reaching out to her through a video call to see when she will come back.

However, outside of a handful of moments, there is no reason for Clark to have a big role in Kara’s story, similar to how she didn’t play a massive factor in his 2025 installment. It would undermine Kara’s DCU movie if Krypton’s last son was occupying too much of her journey.

Their individual stories will also be crucial before 2027, as Alcock is officially part of the Man of Tomorrow movie, which is currently in production. James Gunn confirmed on May 20 that the two Kryptonian superheroes will be reunited next summer, with the Girl of Steel set to have a crucial role in the franchise going forward.

Man of Tomorrow will introduce the DC villain Brainiac into Gunn’s superhero continuity, as he shares a long history with both Kara and Clark in the comic canon. The DCU is the first time any live-action movie franchise has featured Superman and Supergirl at the same time, as they will now also get to team up against a common threat in 2027.

Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26.
