Despite now being available to watch at home, Michael sings past a major box office milestone.
Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the King of Pop in the biopic, which has proven to be a smash hit at the box office. In its opening weekend, the film grossed $217 million globally and $97 million domestically. After the exceptional start, it has proven to have legs at the box office, having previously surpassed the $800 million worldwide mark.
Per Deadline, Michael has now earned more than $900 million globally, with $554.8 million at the international box office and $355.2 million domestically, and with both totals continuing to rise. This milestone comes on the same day that the biopic became available for digital rental or purchase. Michael is now only $11 million away from becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, as Bohemian Rhapsody holds the record at $911 million.
In the coming days, Michael should easily surpass Bohemian Rhapsody‘s record. The question is whether it can reach $1 billion worldwide before the theatrical run ends. The only other 2026 movie to achieve this milestone so far is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which did so this past weekend after being in theaters for two months and releasing digitally on May 19. Michael has not been in theaters for as long yet, since it debuted on April 24.
Between the impressive box office earnings and a “Verified Hot” 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the general response has been overwhelmingly positive, allowing it to continue doing well in theaters and now on digital as well. With a 39% Tomatometer score, the critical reception was more negative, although ScreenRant‘s Michael review by Liz Declan gave the movie nine out of 10 stars and described the film as “a masterclass in what a biopic should be.”
