The X-Men franchise follows the titular team of superheroes, composed of Wolverine, Magneto, Cyclops, and many others, and their quest to rid their fight against anti-mutant oppression. Sadly, their noble quests have rarely translated into decent adaptations, especially when it comes to video games.
However, as Sony recently revealed in its PlayStation State of Play on June 2, X-Men’s streak of bad luck will soon come to an end. In the highly-anticipated program, they revealed the release date for Marvel’s Wolverine, which may prove to be a game-changer for the X-Men.
What We Know So Far About Marvel’s Wolverine
Highly anticipated as it is, hardly anyone knows exactly what the plot of Marvel’s Wolverine will be. The premise seems clear: James “Logan” Howlett, seemingly a mild-mannered average Joe — actually a century-plus-old mutant — dons the mantle of Wolverine and claws his way through one brutal, bloody fight after another.
A little more is known about the gameplay, thanks to Sony’s extended showcasing of footage. It’s clear the game takes after the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, a similar superhero series also developed by Insomniac. However, ‘if the “M” rating at the start of the trailer didn’t give it away, Marvel’s Wolverine is quite gorier than those Spider-Man titles.
From what has been demonstrated, Marvel’s Wolverine plays more like a hack-and-slash game than a standard action-adventure romp. As Logan attacks, his fire gauge fills; when it reaches maximum, players can switch to a more vicious mode. This allows Logan to be more calculated with his attacks, resulting in much slower and more gruesome deaths for enemies than normal.
Of course, Logan, even with his literal sharpness, isn’t able to take everyone down by himself. In this case, he will be assisted by other superheroes along the way. For example, during a mission where Logan must take down anti-mutant forces, Jean Grey, the original Marvel Girl herself, will use her telekinetic powers to dispel enemies standing in her and Logan’s way.
Speaking of this mission, there is a segment where Logan must use a motorcycle to race toward a van carrying mutants. Players will have to dodge obstacles while on the bike, including gunfire and trees. At the end of this segment, Logan must use a fallen tree as a ramp to launch onto the van.
Marvel’s Wolverine Is a Literal Game-Changer for X-Men
Judging by the highly positive comments on the extended gameplay trailer on YouTube, it’s probable that Marvel’s Wolverine will be a hit when it launches on PS5 on September 15. While not featuring the X-Men as a team, the appearance of Logan as Wolverine, along with traditional X-Men villains like Mystique and Sabretooth, plants the game firmly in the franchise.
This means the game also stands a chance at doing right by the franchise with a proper adaptation of the X-Men as a whole. With how action-packed it is, it will be able to get gamers into the X-Men universe, while also satisfying X-Men megafans.
With the game releasing exclusively on the PS5, something that doesn’t come as a shock considering that it and the Marvel’s Spider-Man games are owned by Sony itself, it’s also bound to attract gamers of all stripes to the six-year-old console. The look of the game also shows that the PS5’s hardware hasn’t aged at all.
At this stage, it’s all but pointless for Sony to push out a new PlayStation when its current-gen offerings are just good enough. Combined with what else was revealed at the State of Play, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and God of War Laufey, there is a bright future in store for both PlayStation and X-Men.
