It’s time for Another Round. Netflix is ready to celebrate the arrival of Mads Mikkelsen’s hit 2020 black comedy-drama film on the streaming platform.
“ANOTHER ROUND is now on Netflix alert,” the streaming giant shared on X (formerly Twitter) along with a video of Mikkelsen chugging a drink and dancing around enthusiastically from the film, eventually running through a crowd that showers him in alcohol as he twirls around to music.
It’s an appropriate reaction befitting the movie, which sees four high school teachers doing a hilarious and dangerous experiment to see what it’s like to maintain a constant level of alcohol in their bloodstream. It won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2020.
Critics Hailed Mikkelsen’s Performance in Another Round
In addition to Mikkelsen, Another Round also starred several other Danish stars, including Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe. As the teachers experiment with keeping their alcohol levels up, they try to see if it will boost their creativity and confidence, prompted by the fact that they all struggle with the feeling that their lives have become boring and uninspiring to their students.
Needless to say, their experiment goes over with mixed results for the four teachers, and while there are several hilarious drunken moments, like the clip Netflix shared, there’s also plenty of dark drama that unfolds. While Another Round‘s plot doesn’t go entirely as expected, one thing’s for sure: the film went over phenomenally with both critics and audiences.
Another Round is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 93% approval rating from over 230 critics. Its audience score is similarly high at 90% from over 1,000 user reviews. Critics called the film a “deftly directed tragicomedy” while also remarking that Mikkelsen was in “vintage form,” which all came together to make Another Round “an intoxicating look at midlife crises.”
“Mads is every [country’s] national [treasure] but, honestly, this was fantastic!” One Rotten Tomatoes user wrote in a 5-star review of the film. “I have never watched anything so wonderful and left me full of hope for life.”
Hollywood and the rest of the world definitely agreed. Another Round was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2021, winning Best International Feature Film in addition to a Best Director nod for Thomas Vinterberg. It also scored four BAFTA nominations, winning ‘Best Film Not in the English Language,’ along with a Critics Choice Movie Award and Golden Globe Award nomination, both for Best Foreign Language Film.
An American English Remake of Another Round is On the Way
While Mikkelsen’s role in Another Round has taken the internet by storm in recent years, the film’s popularity has grown so much that an English version is in the works. In 2021, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio would star in the American version of the film, which would be produced by Appian Way Productions, Endeavor Content and Makeready. It’s been several quiet years without updates on the remake, but that all changed in 2024.
Chris Rock was said to be attached to direct the movie at the start of 2024, with Thanks for Sharing‘s Stuart Blumberg writing a draft script. Thomas Vinterberg, the original film’s director and writer, even later joked of Rock’s apparent involvement: “If it’s sh–, he’ll get slapped again.” Further updates on the remake have not materialized in the last two years.
Another Round is now streaming on Netflix.
