Kevin Feige Confirms the MCU’s Divisive X-Men Casting Strategy

After Avengers: Doomsday, the X-Men will be reimagined once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long-gestating X-Men reboot. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has reaffirmed that the casting strategy for the reboot will lean heavily into recruiting younger actors to take on the roles of the iconic characters.

As has been previously announced, Thunderbolts helmer Jake Schreier is set to direct the new X-Men movie, but no casting information has yet been revealed. Per Collider, Feige addressed the project during a recent roundtable discussion, where he offered praise to Schreier’s abilities as a filmmaker. He also shared how the reboot would be a “very youth-oriented” film, given that the goal is for the reboot to appeal to a younger demographic.

Expect a Younger Cast in the X-Men Reboot

“Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker,” Feige said. “We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts, and if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions — he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic… because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”

Schreier has also teased what he has in store for the project. In April, he shared that the goal was to make the reboot “feel new” while still honoring the films that came before it. That could mean that it will come with some key lore differences as a means of offering something different that fans have not yet seen throughout the history of the franchise.

“I think really just what we’ve been talking about more than anything is how do we make it feel new, and how do we go places that feel like we’re succeeding [our predecessors]?” he told ScreenRant. “Obviously, this series has done such incredible things and succeeded in so many ways, and done so many beautiful things. Like, what are some places we can go, and some areas of the lore that we can explore where it feels like we’re taking people to a new place?”

Ahead of the formation of the newest incarnation of the X-Men, Marvel fans will first say goodbye to a previous generation. Avengers: Doomsday is confirmed to bring back several stars from the live-action X-Men movie franchise, including names like Patrick stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming. Channing Tatum is also set to return as Gambit after making his debut in the role in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for what’s immediately next for X-Men, the franchise is soon heading back to the small screen with the launch of X-Men ’97 Season 2 on Disney+ on July 1. The animated series has been a major success, which could be giving the new reboot some added momentum through production.

The X-Men reboot does not yet have a set release date.

Patrick Stewart as Professor X, James Marsden as Cyclops and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine are featured in the cover in X-Men (2000).
