Josh Brolin vs. a Whale in Trailer for Survival Thriller Whalefall

The first terrifying teaser trailer for Whalefall has arrived. It even gives audiences their first glimpse at what being swallowed whole looks like on the silver screen.

The first teaser trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin was released on June 9, offering fans a look at all the utterly horrifying action to come when the film arrives in theaters. While the trailer begins by showcasing Abrams’ Jay Gardiner as he embarks upon his journey to retrieve the remains of his late father Mitt, portrayed by Brolin, it takes a horrifying turn when the young diver is quite literally swallowed whole by a passing sperm whale.

What Whalefall Will Bring to the Silver Screen Later This Year

Brian Duffield directed Whalefall from a screenplay co-written with original author Daniel Kraus, based on Kraus’ 2023 novel of the same name. The survival movie’s announcement made major waves, as Imagine Entertainment announced it had acquired the rights to the feature even before the novel made its way into stores.

Like the novel, Whalefall will follow Jay’s personal journey from the last days of his father’s life up through his death and all the way to the harrowing circumstances he is swept up in while trying to recover Mitt’s corpse from its final resting place. Along with Abrams and Brolin, Whalefall stars Elisabeth Shue as Jay’s mother, Zara, as well as John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd.

Kraus’ original novel was a hit upon its release, garnering near-universal acclaim from critics and readers alike. As of the time of writing, Whalefall holds a 3.68/5 rating on review aggregator GoodReads, based on 32,154 ratings and 6,165 reviews in total.

The official solicit text for Whalefall from MTV Books reads, “The dive begins well enough, but the sudden appearance of a giant squid puts Jay in very real jeopardy, made infinitely worse by the arrival of a sperm whale looking to feed. Suddenly, Jay is caught in the squid’s tentacles and drawn into the whale’s mouth, where he is pulled into the first of its four stomachs. He quickly realizes he has only one hour before his oxygen tanks run out — one hour to defeat his demons and escape the belly of a whale.”

What’s Next for the Stars of Whalefall?

Sony Pictures

Before Whalefall makes its way into theaters, Abrams will be leading the cast of writer-director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. Abrams will portray Bryan, a medical courier swept up in the events spun out of 1998’s Resident Evil 2. Alongside Abrams, Resident Evil stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson, and Paul Walter Hauser.

Brolin, on the other hand, will be heading back to cinemas after Whalefall for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. The movie will mark the end of Villeneuve’s epic Dune and will see Brolin reprise his role as Gurney Halleck. Dune: Part Three also brings back original stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Zendaya as Chani. Rounding out the core cast of Dune: Part Three are Florence Pugh, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem.

Whalefall is currently slated to arrive in theaters on October 16.
