James Bond Fans Surprised With New GoldenEye 007 Remaster

GoldenEye 007 is unquestionably one of the most iconic FPS games ever created, laying the groundwork for countless multiplayer games to come and proving that the genre could thrive on console. Released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, Rare’s adaptation of the James Bond film arrived at a time when FPS titles were largely associated with PC gaming.

While a long-rumored remastered version of GoldenEye 007 from Rare was famously completed for Xbox 360 in the late 2000s, it was never officially released due to licensing and rights issues involving Nintendo, Microsoft, MGM, and the James Bond franchise. Despite other GoldenEye remakes and modern upgrades releasing over the years, Rare’s completed 360 remaster arguably remains the most sought-after.

Although the remaster was canceled before launch, leaked footage and builds later surfaced online, giving fans a glimpse of what could have been one of gaming’s most anticipated revivals. But after decades of waiting, fans can finally get their hands on a new version of the long-awaited cancelled remaster of GoldenEye 007 (via DSO).

The cancelled GoldenEye 007 Xbox 360 remaster has received a new lease on life thanks to a fan-led PC port project. Modders have worked to bring the unreleased version to PC through native recompilation, adding modern features such as online multiplayer support, improved performance, and additional support for modern gaming controllers, as well as possible mouse and keyboard support.

Originally developed by Rare and shelved in 2008 due to licensing complications, the remaster became one of gaming’s most famous lost releases, and gamers can finally dive in for a taste thanks to this unofficial recomp. However, to use this fan-made PC port, you’ll first need a copy of the original cancelled Xbox 360 version of GoldenEye 007. The problem is that the game was never officially released, so finding the required game file may be difficult (but not impossible if you know where to look).

The unofficial recomp file can be found here via GitHub, and while the original X360 ROM file will take a bit of sleuthing to track down, hardcore fans looking to get their hands on the highly sought-after cancelled GoldenEye 007 remaster from Rare shouldn’t have too hard of a time getting this beautiful recomp up and running on their PC.
