Taylor Sheridan has essentially become the king of television after creating Yellowstone and so many other shows that have proven to be major hits. Now, it’s becoming clear that Yellowstone and Paramount are at the beginning of a new era, aiming to make a mark in the world of video games.
During Summer Game Fest, it was announced that Paramount is going all-in with video game content through its new gaming division, Paramount Games Studios. The first big project under this endeavor is a collaboration with PlatinumGames to develop an adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. Paramount Games Studio boss Shawn Kittelsen has now spoken out more about the company’s creative plans with Polygon, confirming that there are tentative plans to make a Yellowstone video game.
Yellowstone: The Video Game Is in the Planning Stages
To be clear, the “core four” properties that will be targeted primarily include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and SpongeBob SquarePants. With that noted, Kittelsen confirmed that Yellowstone and Paramount’s other TV shows from Taylor Sheridan are also “priorities” at Paramount Games Studio. He also named Lioness as another title he was looking to adapt as a video game.
“All of the Yellowstone and Yellowstone-adjacent titles, Landman, Tulsa King, these are all priorities for us,” Kittelsen said.
The executive wants fans to know that this doesn’t mean these games will be fast-tracked and rushed into development as soon as possible. A focus on quality will still be what’s most important, and sometimes that means taking time to find the “right partners” for each individual project. The company plans to only work with developers which already have a strong track record in making successful games.
Quality Comes First With the Planned Video Games
“We are not brand managers, and we are not IP value extractors,” Kittelsen said. “We are cultural stewards, and these stories, characters, and worlds mean something to the fans who invest so much of their time and money in them. We need to honor that relationship, or we will lose them.”
He added, “If we start like, willy-nilly licensing everything that we can and just to check boxes and fill the coffers, people will get wise to it, and we won’t actually see the success that we could. But if we build pillar by pillar, find the right partners, and make the right games for the audience, I think we can achieve massive success.”
This news comes as Sheridan is already getting one step ahead by getting involved with the world of video games. He’s currently working on a screenplay for Paramount’s Call of Duty feature film that’s set for a Summer 2028 release with director Peter Berg (The Kingdom) at the helm. Perhaps that means that Sheridan will also be open to working on the planned video game adaptations of his TV shows, which would certainly help make them much more authentic throughout the transition to an all-new medium.
