Hereditary could be returning.
A24’s Hereditary grossed over $90 million worldwide and at the time of release was the highest-grossing film for A24, which was previously held by Lady Bird. It also achieved critical acclaim with an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as it was praised for the story and stellar performances from the cast, including Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Milly Shapiro.
Writer and director Ari Aster spoke to Gold Derby and confirmed a prequel to the horror Hereditary has been written. Aster is known for directing four major movies for A24, including Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid, and Eddington.
“I wrote a prequel to this. It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don’t know where this goes.”
Horror movies are currently dominating the box office and those include another A24 hit, Backrooms, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons and Curry Barker’s Obsession. Aster spoke about the success circulating the genre and, in particular, the two films currently overtaking major blockbusters. “This is a really interesting month for Curry and Kane. I’m thrilled to see that. That’s so exciting,” says Aster.
