Guy Ritchie is a successful filmmaker, but his latest releases failed to land. While Fountain of Youth at least went straight to streaming, his new action film In the Grey was a major flop.
The movie had a strong cast and received positive reviews from moviegoers, but it wasn’t enough to become a success. It was surprise-dropped on digital platforms on June 2 after less than a month following its premiere on May 15. While it did momentarily top the charts on Apple TV, it quickly lost that position, FlixPatrol reports.
In the Grey Failed to Impress
On its first day, In the Grey debuted in second place on the Apple TV store, making its way to No. 1 the following day, a position it held for another day. However, it dropped back to No. 2 on June 6, after just two days of dominating the charts. The movie fell behind Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary.
It also dropped on the Amazon digital charts in 14th place, and it’s currently in 13th place in the U.S., eighth on Vudu, and seventh on the Google charts.
In the Grey stars Eiza González as cutthroat lawyer Rachel Wild, who specializes in recovering debts for rich and powerful clients. In the action thriller, she enlists her team of fixers, Sid and Bronco, respectively, to recover a one billion dollar debt from a criminal organization.
The action film debuted to mixed reviews, and it currently holds a 47% “rotten” score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes out of 57 reviews, but a thrilling 83% from the audience. The positive reaction to the film didn’t reflect in ticket sales, as In the Grey only won back $13.5 million against a considerable $70 million production budget.
In the Grey Reunited Guy Ritchie With Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill has multiple projects in development, with his Highlander reboot currently in production, the upcoming Enola Holmes 3, and the live-action remake of Voltron, as well as the Warhammer 40k series.
The Man of Steel star collaborated with Ritchie several times, as he led the 2015 spy film The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the 2024 historical war comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Cavill wasn’t the only Ritchieverse actor on the cast, as González worked with the filmmaker several times, too, starring in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and 2025’s Fountain of Youth. Jake Gyllenhaal also collaborated with Ritchie on the 2023 action war film The Covenant.
Although In the Grey didn’t work out well for Ritchie, the filmmaker has many projects left to come out. One of them is the black comedy Wife & Dog, which stars Rosamund Pike and Benedict Cumberbatch, and it’s set for release in October.
He also has two highly anticipated TV shows coming back: the Paramount+ hit MobLand, and the Netflix spinoff The Gentleman. Both shows return for Season 2. He’s also working on Season 2 of Prime Video’s Young Sherlock.
In the Grey is available to rent or purchase on all digital platforms.
