Grand Theft Auto 5 may be 13 years old, but Rockstar is still showing it love after more than a decade, and even in the midst of Grand Theft Auto 6’s heyday. Indeed, Grand Theft Auto 6’s hype continues to skyrocket as summer pre-release marketing for Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster epic is nigh, and its official release date is roughly five months away.
It’d probably be preferable to a considerable portion of the Grand Theft Auto franchise for Rockstar to move on to Grand Theft Auto 6 completely, and we still have no clue how Grand Theft Auto 5’s online component, Grand Theft Auto Online, might be adapted or integrated into the sixth mainline installment (when Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on PC is also a mystery). Nonetheless, the favorable treatment that Grand Theft Auto 5 is currently receiving has fans of another Rockstar franchise feeling neglected.
Rockstar recently announced that any players who own Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS4 will have a free PS5 upgrade accessible starting tomorrow, June 18. But, while this is fantastic news for fans of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the Grand Theft Auto franchise as a whole, Red Dead Redemption fans who’ve taken to Reddit are disappointed that Rockstar’s Wild West RPG series has had no such fortune.
User Hypnotic101 writes, “Cool, now do an RDR2 PS5 update,” and they’re not alone in wanting Red Dead Redemption 2 to finally make its long-awaited and highly anticipated hardware generation leap on consoles. Moreover, some fans are simply upset about the fact that they had previously paid for the PS5 Grand Theft Auto 5 update themselves, only for it to now be made free: “Of course they do this after everyone paid for the upgrade,” writes user Most-Principle-4994.
Of course, it makes all the sense in the world for Rockstar and Take-Two to be centering its attention fully on Grand Theft Auto right now. Grand Theft Auto 6 is obviously going to be Rockstar and Take-Two’s focal point for the foreseeable future, hence why they would presumably be giving players this free Grand Theft Auto 5 update now, and users like thebeast_96 are cognizant of how long it may be before that focus reverts to the Red Dead Redemption franchise: “Only when RDR3 is close to release. So approximately a decade.”
Regardless, it’s neat to see moves being made on Rockstar and Take-Two’s elaborate and unpredictable chessboard, even if fans would rather those moves be made for Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 4, as opposed to Grand Theft Auto 5. As days and weeks go by, and the number of months between now and Grand Theft Auto 6 depletes, there may yet be a lot in store for the franchise, including a third trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6.
