There are few more iconic fictional monsters than Godzilla, who for over seven decades has made a major impact on popular culture with countless references from his films and series around the world. However, channeling all of Godzilla’s monstrousness, a new anime brings the wildest addition to the Kaijuverse yet.
Anime has proven that there is still great potential left to explore in the Kaiju genre. Not only has Kaiju No. 8 become one of Shōnen Jump’s biggest hits in recent years, but a new Godzilla anime was recently announced, featuring a young boy gaining the giant monster’s abilities. However, Kaiju Girl Caramelise manga took this concept first, combining the epic fury of a protagonist transforming into a Kaiju with the sweetness of a high school romance.
While fans prepare for the release of Godzilla Minus Zero later this year, there’s no better way to pass the time in the meantime than with the new anime adaptation of Kaiju Girl Caramelise, which will premiere in summer of 2026 and shows what a towering Kaiju would look like appearing in Tokyo if it were a damsel in love.
Kaiju Girl Caramelise Is the Godzilla-Inspired Romance Fans Didn’t Know They Needed
In what could be the strangest Kaiju origin, the series Kaiju Girl Caramelise tells the story of Kuroe Akaishi, a socially awkward and bullied high school girl who hides a rare genetic condition beneath layers of baggy clothes. Things like sharp claws, horns, and spikes on her back, Kuroe’s body monstrously deforms when her emotions rise. But keeping it under control ceases to be something that would affect her reputation and becomes a matter of national security when Kuroe discovers that she can transform into a full-fledged kaiju after meeting Arata Minami.
This love story twist on the Godzilla formula, however, is handled in the best possible way. Beyond the initial impact of the sudden appearance of the 110-meter-tall rampaging colossal creature, unfazed by gunfire and helicopters flying around, Kaiju Girl Caramelise‘s story remains absolutely true to its core as a pure and sweet romantic comedy, making viewers want to root for the relationship between Kuroe and Minami.
But beyond the funny and sugary moments, the overarching mystery of Kaiju Girl Caramelise gradually takes shape. The series constantly gives away clues about the reason for Kuroe’s condition, making viewers wonder whether she is the only one who suffers from it and if she will be able to avoid giving in to the desire for destruction after transforming, in addition to great cliffhangers that leave the viewer wanting to know what’s next.
Kaiju Girl Caramelise Is the Ultimate and Weirdest Love Letter to the Kaiju Genre
Spica Aoki, the author of the Kaiju Girl Caramelise manga, stated their love for Godzilla in the epilogue of the series’ first volume, which led them to pitch the story idea to their editor. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Kuroe’s kaiju form design is strongly reminiscent of Godzilla, and the series is riddled with references to the kaiju genre, to the point that each chapter of the manga is named in a way that parodies episode titles from popular tokusatsu franchises like Ultraman.

It’s Official, A New Kaiju No. 8 Anime Is Releasing This Fall
Kaiju No. 8 is officially getting a new anime spin-off this Fall and fans will not want to miss the fan-favorite character it is about.
Also, one of the series’ characters is a Kaiju-obsessed girl, which creates several opportunities for parodies of the Godzilla franchise and iconic TOHO monsters like Mothra and King Ghidorah. Furthermore, contrary to what it might seem, Kaiju Girl Caramelise is not classified as a shojo story aimed at a female audience. The series is published in a seinen magazine, which means it targets an adult demographic. This makes Kaiju Girl Caramelise an anime that can be enjoyed by any fan of the kaiju and tokusatsu genre.
Produced by Liden Films, the studio behind visually appealing series like Call of the Night and romcoms like Insomniacs After School, Kaiju Girl Caramelise already shows great quality in its latest trailer with a stunning and epic detailed design of Kuroe post-Kaiju transformation, as well as the typical pastel colors one would expect from a romance series. Kaiju Girl Caramelise is scheduled to premiere on July 2, 2026, and although there is no confirmed streaming platform yet, as the release date approaches, the official anime website will surely reveal more information.
