Although it’s pretty much confirmed, the next Fallout game is still a long way off. Based on the little we know about the future of the Fallout franchise, we may have to wait until anywhere between 2028 and 2040 to see the next installment in the beloved post-apocalyptic shooter.
If you don’t want to wait that long, one upcoming Steam game may just fill that wasteland-exploration void in your gaming library. This potential gem combines the atmospheric setting of the Fallout games with other gritty wasteland exploration shooters like Metro and The Division.
Developed by DeadGrass Games, the upcoming Steam game Dreadweave is an extraction shooter that sends players into a spooky ghost town. Following a horrible experiment gone wrong, the town has split into two halves: the real world, and the dark, alternate version where a deadly monster stalks your every move.
Like other extraction shooters, Dreadweave tasks players with infiltrating the town, looting everything in sight, then leaving (hopefully in one piece). But in this world, an entity stalks the abandoned streets, honing in on your heartbeat. The higher your character’s heartbeat is, the easier it becomes for the monster to track you down.
Embark on a solo adventure into the snow-covered wilderness of a post-Soviet, Far North setting. Fight (or evade) smart monsters, survive the ever-changing, perilous weather, and make it back to your bunker with as much loot as you can. Here, you’ll be able to upgrade your character and equipment, and prepare to venture back out into the snowy world a little bit stronger every time.
Dreadweave is the DeadGrass Games’ second game, with their first—titled S.P.A.T. (short for “Special Paranormal Assault Team”—releasing in 2021. Although S.P.A.T. received a Mixed rating, the team seems to have learned a lot from their first venture into gaming five years ago.
The trailer for Dreadweave shows a desolate, creepy world that’s ripe for exploration. The bigger rewards are found in the mirror world, where the risk is also much greater, and your time is limited by your air supply.
Dreadweave is listed on Steam as “Coming Soon,” with no release date or window revealed yet. However, you can download and play the extensive demo right now. The developers have been pushing out consistent updates to their game (and demo) through user feedback on Steam, Discord, and social media.
As you wait for more official Fallout news, you can hop into the Dreadweave demo. Experience the existential extraction shooter that’s like a mix of the post-apocalyptic game and The Division.
