A major Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms villain is set to return this fall in a brand-new Ravenloft-set D&D series. Ahead of the series’ release, Dungeons & Dragons has unveiled a first look at the iconic antagonist, and to say the design is gorgeous would be an understatement.
Valindra Shadowmantle, the moon elf who became a lich, is one of the Shadow Realms’ most iconic and memorable villains. Her blend of necromantic horror, intelligence, and political intrigue sets her apart from typical brute-force boss fights in campaigns, making her a fan favorite among players. Now, an official image of the lich has revealed that she is set to return on September 2, 2026, in a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons series that brings fans back to the game’s premier horror setting: Ravenloft.
Dungeons & Dragons returns in Dark Horse Comics’ upcoming Total Party Killers, set to debut on July 22, 2026. The four-part series is being brought to life by writer Christopher Hastings, artist Denis Merdi, and colorist Dan Jackson, and it flips traditional D&D adventuring on its head by making monsters the party members.
As the official synopsis teases, classic D&D monsters, including a lycanthrope, gelatinous cube, mind flayer, death knight, and baby beholder, will form their own adventuring party as they fight for their freedom and potentially to save Ravenloft from total collapse, in a conflict that ultimately brings them into confrontation with the infamous Valindra Shadowmantle.

While Dark Horse Comics’ initial solicitations for its upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers miniseries revealed the concept of classic D&D monsters becoming the adventuring party, it is the recent release of the solicitation for issue #2 that has confirmed Valindra Shadowmantle as the main antagonist, both through cover art and the official synopsis.
The synopsis for Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers #2 reads: “The monster party embarks on a quest to win their freedom from the infamous Valindra Shadowmantle! But the lich and her lackeys aren’t the only obstacles faced by Tilli’s team. When the monsters arrive in the village of Maskyr’s Eye, they are treated as just that by the local residents. Our abhorrent adventurers will need all their skill and cunning (plus a few lucky rolls) to make it through alive!”
Valindra Shadowmantle Could Be the Domains of Dread’s Next Darklord

Dark Horse Comics’ official website also reveals further details about the series, confirming that it will take place within the iconic gothic horror setting of Ravenloft: “Return to Ravenloft for a genre-bending mystery that spans the Domains of Dread!” Given that Valindra Shadowmantle is typically a Forgotten Realms character, it will be especially intriguing to see her make the transition into the Domains of Dread.
With this shift in setting for such an iconic villain, it will also be interesting to see whether the series uses the opportunity to expand Ravenloft lore rather than simply using it as a backdrop. For example, it raises the question of whether Valindra Shadowmantle could be established as one of the cursed rulers of a Domain of Dread (i.e., Darklord).

Disney Confirms Jack Skellington’s Return In Official New Nightmare Before Christmas Series
Disney has officially confirmed that Jack Skellington will return in a brand-new Nightmare Before Christmas series that fans won’t want to miss.
This is a solid possibility, given that the Domains of Dread are essentially designed for ongoing lore expansion. One of the key rules of Ravenloft is that the Mists are always active and always watching, meaning villains like Shadowmantle can be drawn into them and transformed into new Darklords, with entire Domains of Dread potentially forming around them.
Of course, this direction for Shadowmantle remains speculation at this time. What is not speculative, however, is the reveal of her character design for the series, seen on the recent main cover by Elizabeth Beals for Total Party Killers #2. The design is gorgeous, preserving the character’s traditional look while adapting it for the comic medium. As a result, Valindra Shadowmantle is on the verge of embarking on one of her most exciting Dungeons & Dragons chapters yet.
