DC ups the ante with a new Batman art piece that introduces a new version of the Dark Knight into the DC multiverse’s hall of fame. As the most popular hero in DC history, Batman has left a huge mark on pop culture across a wide variety of adaptations, from Adam West’s brightly-colored 1960s Caped Crusader to Ben Affleck’s hyper-brutal, battle-weary powerhouse, and from Kevin Conroy’s legendary voice work in DC animated shows and the Arkham game franchise to LEGO’s massively successful Batman movie and video games.
Likewise, there are countless different takes on Batman in DC Comics. The legend began in 1939 with Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s ruthless, pulp-magazine Golden Age Batman. As the medium modernized, Batman became a full-fledged superhero in the sci-fi-infused Silver Age before being completely revitalized by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which introduced a weary and cynical Bruce Wayne. Alternate realities feature wild versions of the hero, such as Gotham by Gaslight‘s Victorian-age Batman and the terrifying warlord known as the Batman Who Laughs.
For each version of Batman, there’s at least one costume, picture, or scene that becomes their calling card. Detective Comics #27’s Batman is famous for his purple gloves, The Dark Knight Returns‘ Batman is famously bulky and hunched over, and Absolute Batman is taller than any other version of the Caped Crusader. The best Batmen are instantly recognizable.
DC’s New Gargoyle Of Gotham Cover Is The Toughest Batman Art In Years
Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #4 Noir Edition; Written & Illustrated By Rafael Grampá
Rafael Grampá’s acclaimed Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham continues with issue #4, where Gotham citizens turn on each other, corrupted by Doctorgeist’s influence. As the main cover shows, Batman watches from the shadows, more than well prepared to fight hordes of enemies, but injured by all kinds of bladed weapons, his mask fractured, and his costume reinforced with multiple layers of additional makeshift armor. Mirroring his Absolute counterpart’s pose on the Absolute Batman #1 cover, Gargoyle‘s Batman shows off one hammer in each hand.

DC Unveils a Batman Icon’s Official Super Saiyan Form (Yes, Literally)
An iconic Batman hero just turned into a Super Saiyan, as the latest DC hero to unleash the transformation made iconic by Dragon Ball Z.
The Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #4 cover is filled with subtle details. One of the plates wrapped around Batman’s arms includes a Robin emblem, and his belt features an engraving that reads “DIE.” Besides a variety of knives and nails, there’s a hatchet embedded in Batman’s body. And instead of his classic forearm fins, Batman has three protruding knives in the same position, plus an extra blade strapped with tape nearby.
Gargoyle Of Gotham Reinforces A Huge Batman Change
Three Current DC Timelines Feature A Rugged Batman
At least three DC universes have seen a significant change in Gotham lore, with Rafael Grampá’s Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham arriving to reinforce a gritty and unpolished twist also seen in Absolute Batman and Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe. Traditionally, Batman has been a sleek billionaire polymath who fights with pristine combat technique, flawless tactical foresight, and a contrived gadget for every conceivable scenario. These three continuities present a much younger and less refined Bruce Wayne with fewer resources, who relies on sheer willpower and endurance to survive Gotham’s trials.
Instead of effortless acrobatics, all three of these Batmen are constantly injured and often find themselves forced to limp through crime scenes, heavily bruised by standard street-level thugs. Robert Pattinson’s Batman crashes face-first into a bridge during his first wingsuit escape, while Scott Snyder’s blue-collar Absolute Batman works without a mansion or a butler. Likewise, Gargoyle of Gotham‘s Batman depicts a young hero whose costume is constantly slashed and repaired, and whose body is pushed to the brink of exhaustion.
Do you prefer Batman when he’s sleek or when he’s rugged?
