Cowboy Bebop aired from 1998 to 1999, and while it only had 26 episodes, it’s hailed as one of the best sci-fi series of all time. The incredible ’90s anime is truly one of a kind, weaving a character-driven neo-noir story unlike anything else. Decades later, Cowboy Bebop finally has a successor in the new Ghost in the Shell anime set to air this July.
This new Ghost in the Shell series seems to be directly inspired by Cowboy Bebop, with a similar jazzy soundtrack and a more upbeat tone than the ’90s GITS film, though the series still seems poised to tackle some heavy themes. It’s the kind of anime Cowboy Bebop fans have been waiting for, and it could be the biggest anime of summer 2026.
Ghost in the Shell’s New Anime Feels Like a Modern Successor to Cowboy Bebop
The new Ghost in the Shell anime is not a remake of any anime in the GITS universe before it, it’s more like a complete reset. This series will be a direct adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s original manga that started it all. As iconic and influential as the 1995 Mamoru Oshii-directed Ghost in the Shell film is, it also has a very different tone from the original manga.
There’s an argument to be made that Cowboy Bebop is actually closer to the vibe of Shirow’s original The Ghost in the Shell manga than the 1995 movie was. Because of how popular and beautifully animated Oshii’s film was, that was the atmosphere that stuck for subsequent adaptations of the GITS story.
However, pretty much every GITS series missed out on the more light-hearted and comedic elements of Shirow’s manga. That’s something that Cowboy Bebop has in spades. At the same time, the new GITS anime is still taking on that philosophical, introspective atmosphere when necessary, which is a balance that Cowboy Bebop absolutely mastered.
In fact, the new 2026 The Ghost in the Shell anime is really honing in on that Cowboy Bebop feel in more than just its narrative tone. The entire animation style recaptures an old-school anime aesthetic that is definitely rooted in the late 90s era that Bebop called home. Even the vibe of GITS‘ new soundtrack, as revealed in the trailers so far, is quite reminiscent of Bebop’s space-infused jazz soundtrack.
The music for this series is a collaboration between multiple artists, under the direction of Taisei Iwasaki, who is also known for his work on BELLE, Scarlet, and Marriagetoxin, to name a few. He’s joined by iconic Japanese musicians Ryo Konishi and YUKI KANESAKA, both of whom aim to help Iwasaki “handle this precious world with care.” As Iawasaki succinctly puts it: “I followed the whispers of my Ghost!
Science SARU’s Ghost In the Shell Brings the Sci-Fi Genre Full Circle
Science SARU’s directorial vision for The Ghost in the Shell, led by Mokochan (who is making his directorial debut with this project), is capturing a unique retro sci-fi aesthetic that perfectly embodies the old-school nature of the original work, while also still making it futuristic. It truly feels like a work that’s haunted by the ghost of a nostalgic future that’s still familiar despite not having happened yet.
Even the main characters of the series have a certain vibe to them that feels reminiscent of Bebop’s Spike, Jet Black and Faye Valentine. The new (but actually old) version of Major Kusanagi feels like the idealized mixture of both Spike and Faye. She has Spike’s nonchalent vibe and skillful combat skills, but she also knows when to turn on her sexuality and can be a bit hotheaded like Faye was.
Likewise, The Ghost in the Shell’s newer (but actually older) version of Batou is himself something like the precursor to Cowboy Bebop‘s Jet Black. He’s a muscular meathead who can often rein in the Major’s recklessness with a wisdom born from experience — just like Jet did for Spike.
The reality is that these character archetypes are a sign of the times in which they were created. The Ghost in the Shell was one of the seminal works of the early 90s that helped inspire the direction later sci-fi anime and manga like Cowboy Bebop would take in the later part of the decade.
In that sense, Science SARU’s The Ghost in the Shell is like the ultimate successor to Cowboy Bebop, because Cowboy Bebop was itself a spiritual successor to Masamune Shirow’s original GITS manga. The Ghost in the Shell is truly a full-circle moment for sci-fi and cyberpunk that fans of either genre simply can’t ignore.
The Ghost in the Shell comes out on July 7 and will be streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
