Clint Eastwood’s Divisive War Movie Hailed as ‘Imperialist Propaganda’ Is a PVOD Hit 40 Years Later

Movie legend Clint Eastwood’s 40-year-old war film, Heartbreak Ridge, is getting some renewed attention after four decades. Originally released in theaters by Warner Bros. in 1986, it’s still finding new audiences, as evidenced by its newfound PVOD success.

Heartbreak Ridge has emerged from out of nowhere to crack the Top 10 list of movies available on the Apple TV Store, via FlixPatrol. The war flick’s return on PVOD adds a new layer of success to Heartbreak Ridge after it made over $121 million against a $15 million budget at the time of its original debut in theaters. It was also rather divisive when it was first released, described by some critics as “imperialist propaganda” that glorified the American invasion of Grenada by not providing more context behind the real-life conflict in the film.

Eastwood directed and produced Heartbreak Ridge in addition to starring in the lead role. He played Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway, a highly decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars who is approaching his retirement. He is assigned to train a reconnaissance platoon that his superiors have deemed to be hopeless, but it’s a mission Highway accepts. He utilizes his old-school methods to gradually transform the group into a capable fighting unit, which ultimately sees them deployed on a rescue mission during the 1983 invasion of Grenada.

Other stars featured in Heartbreak Ridge include Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City), Marsha Mason (Cinderella Liberty), Everett McGill (Silver Bullet), Moses Gunn (Little House on the Prairie), Eileen Heckart (The First Wives Club), Bo Svenson (Kill Bill: Volume 2), Peter Koch (Johnny Be Good), Boyd Gaines (One Day at a Time), and Tom Villard (Grease 2).

Though some critics were not happy with the movie, resulting in an approval rating of 63%, it was given some high praise from others. Famed critic Roger Ebert gave Heartbreak Ridge three out of four stars, offering a lot of praise to its “truly amazing dialogue” in particular. The New York Times reviewer Vincent Canby also said that the movie features “one of the richest” performances that Eastwood had ever given as an actor. It also holds a respectable audience score of 74%.

Eastwood, now 96 years old, has apparently retired. While he did not publicly announce a retirement, his last movie, 2024’s Juror #2, had been heavily marketed as the final film directed by Eastwood. There has not been any news since about the Hollywood icon being involved with any more projects on either side of the screen. Last year, his son Kyle Eastwood also clearly said in an interview that his father “is retired now,” looking to be a direct confirmation straight from the family.

Heartbreak Ridge is available on the Apple TV Store.
