Mattel Television’s underrated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is taking over the premium video-on-demand charts. Of course, that’s no surprise considering the franchise’s recent resurgence in popularity.
Per FlixPatrol, 2021’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has officially dropped into the Top 10 on the Apple TV Store. The series fluctuated on the charts, reaching its highest point on June 5, which saw a five-spot jump in just a matter of days. On June 6, it’s currently in tenth place. To top things off, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe also holds the fifth spot on the very same chart for Australia.
Mattel Television’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe — Explained
Developed by Rob David, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was produced by Mattel Television for Netflix, and premiered on the streaming giant back in 2021. The series featured Yuri Lowenthal as the voice of Prince Adam, aka He-Man, as well as the likes of Kimberly Brooks, Judy Alice Lee, David Kaye, Antony Del Rio, and Benjamin Diskin and Kevin Conroy, the latter two of whom portrayed the dreaded Skeletor and menacing Hordak, respectively.
Over the course of its three-season run on Netflix, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe managed to amass a tight 26 episodes, all of which built up to a truly intriguing and ultimately massively disappointing cliffhanger ending. Even still, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe managed to maintain its general popularity with audiences, with the series as a whole holding a 64% user-generated “Popcornmeter” score via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
What the Future Might Hold for the Masters of the Universe
On June 5, the latest live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe was released in theaters, introducing fans to Nicholas Galitzine’s iteration of He-Man. The film, directed by Travis Knight, boasts an incredible ensemble cast full of fan-favorite stars, ranging from Idris Elba and Alison Brie to Camila Mendes and James Purefoy.
Masters of the Universe also marked the debut of Jared Leto’s Skeletor, who is every bit as believably cartoonish as the rest of the classic characters that the film brings to life on the silver screen. Director Travis Knight previously discussed how the production transformed Jared Leto into the instantly recognizable villain, noting, “You know, the movie is a hybrid of sorts. There’s a lot of visual effects in the film, but there’s a lot of practical special effects in the film. So we shot on camera… Ultimately, we replaced the face with a CG skull, and that was like when we bring that into the world of animation to really make the skull feel like it’s emoting.”
As for what the future looks like for Masters of the Universe, Knight has been open about not planning for a sequel ahead of time, although he has also admitted to being entirely open to developing and producing one if given the chance. Considering the overwhelmingly positive response that Masters of the Universe has garnered, not to mention the expected $30 million opening weekend it is currently in the midst of, fans may very well be seeing Galitzine’s He-Man head back to theaters for another trip across Eternia sooner rather than later.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is currently available via premium video-on-demand on Apple TV.
