Channing Tatum Finally Returning to Jump Street, but 1 Big Question Remains

For years, there have been rumblings about a new installment being made for the 21 Jump Street franchise. The third movie is now officially moving forward, but not with the title that fans would expect.

It was just reported by Variety that Sony Pictures is developing the feature film 24 Jump Street, a follow-up to the previous movies in the franchise. Stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are all in talks to reprise their roles. It will serve as a sequel to 2012’s 21 Jump Street and 2014’s 22 Jump Street. Negotiations are still ongoing for the lead actors and a release date has not yet been set.

A Director Has Already Signed On

Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) is on board to direct 24 Jump Street after co-writing the screenplay with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of the previous films, are also returning to serve as producers. Hill and Matt Dines are set to produce as well under their Strong Baby umbrella, joined by Neal H. Mortiz as well as Tatum and Reid Carolin for Free Association.

Some fans will be asking why the third film will be titled 24 Jump Street, as there was no 23 Jump Street, which would be the most expected title for the next installment. This is likely as part of a running gag for the franchise, with the movies serving as a self-aware reboot of the original TV show from the 1980s. 22 Jump Street saw Tatum and Hill’s characters pursuing other undercover missions that could be seen as 23 Jump Street in a gag at the end o fthe film. Still, Tatum has previously teased how there were plans to make an actual 23 Jump Street movie, which at one point was written as a crossover with Men in Black.

The Men in Black Crossover Fizzled Out

“There is a project that was written and it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie,” Tatum told ComicBook.com in 2024. “It’s really hard to get it made and we’ve been trying to get it done… You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there and I’m going to say I would love to see 23 Jump Street. I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah I know wants to do it. We would love to just get to go play again.”

21 Jump Street saw Tatum and Hill playing Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt, officers assigned to a special undercover unit called Jump Street. They go undercover as high school students in order to determine who is supplying a dangerous new drug. Ice Cube also starred as Captain Dickson, the duo’s intimidating boss. In 22 Jump Street, the two pose as college students to find another drug supplier, ending with a meta gag about future sequels, complete with fake previews for other Jump Street movies.

24 Jump Street does not have a set release date at this time.
