Fans of the hit Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series are among the most loyal and passionate of any fandom out there, and have seen a wave of new content from the franchise in recent years that’s left them feeling overwhelmingly optimistic for its future. This includes the live-action reboot of the series on Netflix, which isn’t universally loved, but for the most part, is keeping long-time fans entertained.
Further, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months as well, with the upcoming release of the Avatar Aang animated movie set to launch on Paramount+ after a controversial decision to cancel its theatrical debut. And fans are counting down the days for Avatar: Seven Havens, the official Legend of Korra sequel series set to debut in 2027.
On the video game front, after being delayed from its original launch date, the upcoming July 23 release of the official Avatar fighting game, Avatar Legends, has fans very excited about a return to form for the franchise. However, this won’t be much solace, as a recent announcement regarding the cancellation of a long-awaited new Avatar: The Last Airbender release is sure to come as devastating news to fans (via IGN).
According to recent reports regarding the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG first announced in 2024, Paramount Skydance has officially suspended the project indefinitely after fans were told to expect the “biggest video game in franchise history.” The news comes after years of anticipation among gamers and longtime fans of the animated series and its various spin-offs, and is a result of a new merger between Paramount and Skydance that triggered some big changes at the company.
The so-called “Ice Wars” RPG has officially been put on ice, and according to IGN, “the Avatar RPG wasn’t in production when Paramount Games Studio … was set up last fall after the Paramount Skydance merger,” with studio heads opting not to go ahead with the project in favor of other IPs such as its flagship title recently revealed at Summer Game Fest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
SVP Shawn Kittelsen, head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games Studio, issued the following somewhat tone-deaf statement on the game’s cancellation:
Games was a sub-department within consumer products. Now we are a business unit, and we’re accountable for driving revenue and building games, and we have a larger team and more support behind us, including the fact that Skydance came with two game studios ready to play.
Ultimately, the decision seems to have been made without much regard to how it would impact the massive Avatar fanbase, who were under the impression the game would be one of the biggest games the franchise would ever see. Paramount will surely face some pushback over their choice to can the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG, but fans are left with no choice but to cut their losses and move on.
