After 24 Years, Firefly Is Officially Back With First Look At New Series

After 24 years, Firefly is back with a new series, and it has released a first look. Although it ran for only one short season, Firefly managed to capture the hearts and minds of a devoted legion of fans. The franchise received a big-screen theatrical film, Serenity, that seemingly brought the story of Malcolm Reynolds and his crew to a close.

Firefly was a unique type of science fiction show. Conceived as a “space western,” Firefly was set hundreds of years in the future. Climate disasters had forced humans to evacuate Earth, and they eventually settled on another solar system. Humanity’s new home system was large, containing many habitable worlds, and each week the crew of the Serenity traversed it, righting wrongs and staying one step ahead of the Alliance. Firefly helped launch the careers of Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin, among others, and remains on streaming to this day.

Firefly has inspired an entire multimedia franchise, including novels and comic books. Both Dark Horse and Boom Studios have taken turns producing comics based on the property. Some of the Firefly comics moved the story beyond the movie, in some cases going 20 or 30 years into the future. Others explored the history of the Firefly universe. Now, Dynamite Entertainment has secured the rights to create new Firefly comics, and ScreenRant has a first look.

Dynamite Is Launching a New Firefly Comic in Style

Today, Dynamite announced Firefly #1, which will be written by Mark Russell and drawn by Lorenzo Re. Dynamite shared a solicitation for the first issue, which reads as follows:

Eisner Award-winning writer MARK RUSSELL (Superman: Space Age, Batman: Dark Age) and rising star artist LORENZO RE (The Terminator) invite you aboard the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity for all new renegade adventures! As this all-new adventure begins, Mal Reynolds is desperate for cash to keep Serenity flying, while Simon and Kaylee must pose as a married couple to pull off a heist, but end up with more than they bargained for when an old caper comes back to haunt them.

In addition, Dynamite has provided a first look at the main and variant covers for Firefly #1, including contributions from Meghan Hetrick, Daniel Warren Johnson and Declan Shalvey. The book will also ship with a special Blind Bag variant.

Dynamite did not specify in its press release when exactly in the timeline Firefly #1 is set, but the covers, featuring both Shepard Book and Wash, might seem to indicate it is set before the events of Serenity.

Both Book and Wash were killed in that movie, much to the chagrin of fans. If Firefly #1 is indeed set before the movie, then seeing Wash and Book again will be a treat for diehards.

Firefly’s arrival at Dynamite is a cause for celebration. The franchise managed to hook countless fans on the strength of a small handful of episodes. When the show debuted on DVD, the set sold extremely well, and it persuaded executives to give the show another go, as a feature film. Even though Serenity was a dud at the box office, it remains a cult hit. It was not the most satisfying of finales, but it managed to tie up many loose ends.

The premature cancellation of Firefly left a gaping hole in the science fiction genre. The few episodes it actually got hinted at a large and fascinating world, one that went virtually unexplored. The Serenity film provided a few more bread crumbs for fans, but still left some aspects a mystery, particularly what happened to Earth. The Firefly comics produced by Boom and Dark Horse filled in many of these plot holes.
