33 Years Later, Ninja Scroll Finally Returns With New Theatrical Release

For anime fans who came of age during the medium’s explosive international growth in the 1990s, few films carry the same reputation as Ninja Scroll. Released in Japan in June 1993, the dark fantasy action film became one of the defining gateway anime for Western audiences. Its blend of graphic violence, mature themes, and breathtaking animation made it both celebrated and controversial, helping establish anime as a medium capable of telling stories far beyond children’s entertainment.

Now, more than three decades after its debut, Ninja Scroll is preparing for another major comeback, according to Crunchyroll. HIDIVE and Iconic Events Releasing have announced a new theatrical run of the film across the United States and Canada, giving longtime fans and newcomers an opportunity to experience one of anime’s most influential movies on the big screen once again. This latest return comes with a big upgrade that aims to showcase the film better than ever before.

The upcoming screenings will take place on October 4, 5, and 7, 2026, at participating theaters throughout the United States and Canada. Unlike previous reissues, this event will feature a newly restored 4K version of the film. The restoration was overseen by director Yoshiaki Kawajiri, ensuring that the presentation remains faithful to the original vision while benefiting from modern image quality improvements.

The film’s return follows the strong reception of its previous anniversary screenings. In 2024, Ninja Scroll celebrated its 30th anniversary with a theatrical release that reached more than 500 theaters across the United States. The lasting popularity of the film proved that audiences still have a strong appetite for classic anime, especially titles that helped shape the industry’s global reputation.

Additional plans for the restoration are already in motion. Earlier this year, the upgraded version premiered at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received multiple screenings for festival attendees. Fans can also look forward to a 4K UHD SteelBook release scheduled for early 2027, allowing collectors to own the restored edition after its theatrical run concludes.

Why Ninja Scroll Remains One of Anime’s Most Influential Films

Produced by MADHOUSE and directed by studio co-founder Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Ninja Scroll became famous for pushing boundaries. While its violence and mature content sparked debate over the years, those same elements helped distinguish it from mainstream animation available in the West during the 1990s. The film showed that anime could target adult audiences while delivering cinematic storytelling and ambitious action sequences.

The story follows wandering swordsman Jubei Kibagami, a mercenary who becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy after rescuing a female ninja named Kagero. Their investigation into a mysterious plague leads them into conflict with the Devils of Kimon, a group of supernatural warriors whose powers make them nearly unstoppable opponents.
