It’s no secret that Persona fans haven’t been getting any new content lately, but that’s about to end. 2027 will see the release of a long-awaited remake, and could potentially see the mythical sixth entry in the mainline series finally launch on PC and consoles.
The last new mainline entry in the Persona series was Persona 5, which launched in 2016 in Japan, and a year later worldwide. Since then, Atlus has focused on updating existing Persona games, remastering/remaking older titles, launching spin-offs, and putting the Phantom Thieves of Heart in a seemingly endless lineup of crossovers. Now, Atlus is finally delivering the games that fans have most been asking for.
Persona 4 Revival Is Finally Launching In 2027
It seems that the era of remakes isn’t over yet, as Atlus announced during the Xbox Games Showcase that Persona 4 Revival is launching on February 18, 2027. While players can enjoy Persona 4 on modern platforms right now, via the HD Remaster of Persona 4 Golden, this latest iteration of the game is a ground-up remake, in the same vein as Persona 3 Reload.
Persona 4 Revival is set in the small town of Inaba, which quickly comes under threat, as a serial killer has started claiming victims. The protagonist is a high school student who has just arrived in town, and one night, they’re dragged into their television set. This happens through the power of the Midnight Channel, where dungeons filled with monsters from mythology appear. Fortunately, the protagonist and his friends aren’t alone in their exploration of this strange new world, as they gain the power to summon Personas: beings of myth and legend that let them use magic in battle.
Like the other Persona games (starting with Persona 3), Persona 4 is all about balancing school life with dungeon exploration, with actions in one affecting the other. If the player makes friends in the real world, then it strengthens their bonds with their Personas, making them even more powerful.
Unlike Persona 3, where the player is always aware of the world-ending threat that looms over them, the story of Persona 4 is more low-key, and is about a building sense of dread, thanks to a lone murderer on the loose. More than a few people have compared it to the fourth story arc in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Diamond is Unbreakable, but in a positive way, rather than accusing it of plagiarism.
Persona 4 Revival is based on the Persona 4 Golden version of the game. This can be seen in the debut gameplay trailer, as the fishing minigame is present, as is Marie, one of Igor’s assistants in the Velvet Room, who has an extensive storyline exclusive to that version of the game. She’s also a potential romance option for the player to pursue.
Persona 4 is one of the best games Atlus ever produced, perhaps only second to Persona 5, and while it doesn’t need the remake treatment as much as its predecessor, it’s still exciting to be able to return to the world of the Midnight Channel in a whole new way. Best of all, it’s going to be a day-one launch on Game Pass.
Persona 6 Could Release In 2027
Persona 4 Revival wasn’t the only game Atlus announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, as they also teased Persona 6, the next mainline entry, and one fans have waited a decade to see. Unfortunately for the fans, they didn’t get to see much, as Persona 6 only had a short trailer which revealed nothing of its story or characters. It was essentially a title card with a few spooky visuals thrown in.
The most disappointing aspect of the Persona 6 trailer was the lack of any release date. Atlus didn’t even throw in a “2027”, which would have fans extremely excited, suggesting that it’s not going to launch until 2028 at the earliest.
However, there’s still a chance Atlus could release Persona 6 in 2027, and that they may be keeping the release date a secret until the studio is 100% sure it can launch next year. And even if the game is pushed to 2028, Atlus will start promoting the game next year, meaning fans will finally get a good look at the title they’ve been dying to play since saying goodbye to the Phantom Thieves of Heart.
