Blockbuster season is officially upon us, and this year, it’s shaping up to be a big one. This week will kick things off with the long-awaited return of Masters of the Universe, which has been showered in praise thus far, as well as the new Scary Movie. Some major heavy hitters are coming down the line, though, starting with Steven Spielberg‘s new alien flick Disclosure Day on June 12, followed by Toy Story 5, the live-action Moana remake, and not one, but two big superhero adventures from DC and Marvel, Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the most anticipated of them all awaits on July 17, and theatergoers are already in a rush to secure their seats.
Today, tickets to see Christopher Nolan‘s adaptation of Homer‘s The Odyssey are on sale for IMAX and other premium formats. Like nothing could stand between Odysseus’ (Matt Damon) men and home, nothing could get in the way of diehard fans and seeing the director’s latest and possibly greatest large-scale cinematic epic on the biggest screen possible. Well, except for Fandango, that is. The rush to secure tickets crashed the Fandango site earlier today and, even now, users are continuing to have issues selecting tickets for the film despite it otherwise functioning properly. As frustrating as the problems have been, it’s once again a testament to the reputation Nolan has built up and the high hopes for the mythological blockbuster that have been mounting since it was first announced.
Assuming you are able to secure tickets to see The Odyssey in IMAX, Nolan promises another feast for the eyes that brings to life the massive scale of the classic Greek story. Clocking in at just under three hours, good for the director’s second-longest film to date, this behemoth of a project will mark the first Hollywood blockbuster ever to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras, pushing the envelope to make the film feel as big as Odysseus’ journey is. It’ll follow the King of Ithaca on his storied voyage back home after the Trojan War, as he faces one trial after another along with his men. From sirens to monsters like Charybdis and Scylla, and the towering cyclops, Polyphemus, the danger is great, threatening to derail his promised return to his family. All the while, back at home, suitors vie for the hand of his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), believing there’s no hope of her husband coming back.
