Romy and Michele are finally heading back to the silver screen after more than two decades. They’re even bringing along most of the original cast for the ride. The long-awaited follow-up to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, starring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, is officially in production.
The Romy and Michele sequel began filming in Los Angeles on Friday, June 5. Tim Federle is directing from a screenplay by original writer Robin Schiff.
What Fans Can Expect from the Romy and Michele Sequel
Along with Kudrow and Sorvino, the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel will also see the return of original stars Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell, who portrayed Heather, Sandy, Toby, and Christie in the original movie. The sequel will also feature appearances from incoming stars Keegan-Michael Key, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, Rob Huebel, and Nathan Lee Graham.
Federle is producing the Rory and Michele sequel alongside Laurence Mark and Barry Kemp, who helped produce the original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Federle and Mark are joined as executive producers on the project by Sorvino, Kudrow, and Schiff, with Kimberly McCullough co-producing.
Although plot details remain slim, it is expected that the sequel will follow along with the eponymous duo of Romy White and Michele Weinberger, portrayed by Sorvino and Kudrow, respectively, as they once again reunite with their former classmates. Assuming the film heads to theaters next year, it would line up with what would be the duo’s 40th high school reunion.
The upcoming Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel does not currently have a planned release date.
