Marvel Comics has suddenly switched lanes and careened toward an epic and exciting new era in the mainline Earth-616 universe, specifically in terms of what will come of the Avengers team. Indeed, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are about to go through a wringer of sorts and come out the other end of their scuffle with Red Hulk much different, presumably, and Chip Zdarsky’s Avengers: Armageddon no longer appears to be too hyperbolic as this summer’s major comic book event.
Avengers: Armageddon has been teased as the event that will reshape Marvel Comics’ near future, and the fruits of its labor are already being plucked and shared with fans. It is unknown what the future will look like for Marvel Comics and the Avengers when all is said and done, but it appears as if there’ll be mass casualties and the survivors who are left to avenge them when the dust settles.
Today, Marvel Comics announced via social media that, following Avengers: Armageddon, an all-new era of the Avengers will assemble as “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors.” It’s impossible not to see this whole initiative/event as a means of synergy with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s own Avengers: Doomsday, releasing in theaters this holiday season, and yet it is thrilling to imagine what Marvel has in store for the Avengers, such as whether a brand-new team roster will arise.
We aren’t left with any details about who Earth’s Mightiest Survivors are, though Avengers: Armageddon #1 hasn’t even been released. Based on what tomorrow’s “full reveal” entails, a clear portrait may be painted concerning what is to ensue in Avengers: Armageddon, as unsatisfying as it might be.
Tomorrow, Marvel is gracing fans with the full reveal of whatever “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors” turns out to be, and it will be fascinating to see how that unfolds. For instance, it will be neat to see if Marvel is teasing an epilogue or relaunch in the wake of Avengers: Armageddon, with Zdarsky and other Marvel architects having devised the next two years of overarching comic book storylines and/or events.
Ironically, anyone who is looking forward to reading Avengers: Armageddon may want to avoid this Earth’s Mightiest Survivors reveal could be spoiled prematurely if it does announce an Avengers roster composed of surviving Avengers affiliates. Any characters who are not announced for the roster could naturally be presumed dead, for instance, and it might ultimately take the wind out of Avengers: Armageddon’s sails if we know months in advance who makes it onto the new Avengers era team by the end of the five-issue series, assuming that a new team is fully revealed.
