Jason Momoa Officially Drops Out of Major Video Game Adaptation

There’s one less upcoming video game adaptation starring Jason Momoa that filmgoers can expect. While he’s set to return for A Minecraft Movie Squared, he’s no longer involved with the other video game film he had been signed on to lead.

In February, it was reported that Momoa was set to star in a Hollywood film based on the hit video game Helldivers. Now, per Deadline, it’s been revealed that Momoa is officially exiting the project. The search for a new lead star is now underway, and the plan is still to have the adaptation release in theaters on Nov. 10, 2027. It is unknown why Momoa is departing the production.

Helldivers: The Movie Needs to Find a New Lead Star

Justin Lin is directing the Helldivers movie. It is being produced by Hutch Parker alongside Lin via Perfect Storm Entertainment and Asad Qizilbash via PlayStation Productions. It’s the latest adaptation from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions following the Uncharted movie, Peacock’s Twisted Metal, and HBO’s The Last of Us.

The original Helldivers was released in 2015. The game is a top-down cooperative shooter, allowing up to four players to fight across planets controlled by alien factions. In 2024, Helldivers 2 was released, taking the same concept and turning it into a third-person shooter with players taking on massive swarms of alien bugs, robots, and other enemies during a galactic war. The sequel game was a major hit, selling over 20 million copies across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

Momoa previously portrayed Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in 2026’s A Minecraft Movie, marking his first video game adaptation. The film was a tremendous hit, making over $961 million at the box office to become one of the highest-grossing video game movies ever. Momoa is returning as Garrett in A Minecraft Movie Squared, the official sequel that’s currently in production. It will be hitting theaters on July 23, 2027.

Meanwhile, Momoa will soon be seen in another major video game movie. He plays Blanka in Street Fighter, the newest feature film based on the hit video game franchise. It is due to be released in movie theaters on Oct. 16, 2026. Sneak peeks at the movie have shown how it will be a rather faithful adaptation of the classic titles of the franchise. Blanka has long been one of the video game series’ most well-known characters, a change from how Garrett Garrison was an original creation for A Minecraft Movie.

As for what’s next, Momoa is returning to the big screen this month. He is playing his dream role of Lobo in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl, the DCU film starring Milly Alcock as the Woman of Tomorrow. It’s likely to be the first of multiple appearances of Momoa as Lobo in the DCU, though it remains to be seen if he will get his very own spinoff movie or TV series.
